How to Give a Great Neck Massage

Seated Neck Massage

1
1. Seat the person on a chair with his or her front side facing the chair's back.
2. Open your hands wide. Place each hand on the person's shoulders.
3
3. Move your thumbs in a circular motion on the person's shoulders. Apply gentle pressure.
4
4. Move from the interior of the person's shoulders (near the spine) toward the outside. Both hands should be moving in tandem, as if there were a mirror in the middle of the person's back.
5
5. Proceed up and down his or her shoulder blades with your thumbs. Make sure to ask if the pressure you're applying is too hard or soft.
6
6. Incorporate your other fingers (on top of his or her shoulders) by squeezing slightly and in a steady rhythm. You don't want to go too fast or too slow. Find a rhythm that is soothing but also comfortable for you to administer.
7
7. Place each thumb on either side of the back of the person's neck, straddling the spine.
8
8. Rub the bottom of the neck where it meets the shoulders with your thumbs. Slowly work up the neck toward the base of the skull.

Prone Neck Massage

1.
1
Have the person lie on his or her back on a bed or comfortable mat.
2
2. Pour massage oil or lotion in your palm. Rub your hands together. The amount of oil or lotion should not be larger than the size of a quarter.
3
3.Place your hands on the person's shoulders. This time your fingers should reach behind the person's shoulders and your thumbs should be visible from the front.
4. Use your fingers to continuously knead his or her neck.Press down with both pinkie fingers, and then follow it by your ring finger, middle finger and forefinger. Do this quickly so it feels like a fluid motion.
5. Place your thumbs on either side of the person's neck. Press down fairly hard. Move down his or her neck to the shoulders until you reach the edges.Perform this action at least 3 times. Apply more pressure each time.
6. Grab the person's neck with both hands at the base of the skull. Pull up slowly.Your thumbs and fingers should be grasping the back of the neck. Your wrist should be under the person's jaw to use as leverage.
